A Creation Story

... thus, the essence of the Metatron suffuses the cosmos with an all-pervasive aether, the quintessence, the fifth element, the philosophik quicksilver - the essence of potentiality. Through the manipulation of which, diverse and awesome works are wrought...

- Arcana V, 17.2

It is held that the current universe emerged through random processes producing more stable forms, which then endure to give more complex, and stable forms, and so forth. Some would believe that an omnipotent entity created the whole thing with creativity, and aforethought. The truth - I suspect - is far more bizarre than either.

But let us remain for the moment in the realm of the imaginable. Picture, if you will, a universe not entirely unlike our own, but where matter has a natural tendency to form itself into complex forms. In such a universe, the Laws of Entropy would be maintained by the enormous array of possibilities available to a given quanity of matter. Lacking any means of distinguishing between possibilities, the changes in such matter would be random, incoherent, and generally ineffective.

What such an enormous reserve of potential lacks is creative direction. It would be not long before sentient beings in such a universe discovered a way to manipulate, and channel such potential, and by the input of energy both thermodynamic and creative, matter could be guided into forms novel and functional.

Such knowledge would be undoubtably termed by men of this world as ``magic,'' or ``alchemy,'' but to the beings of such a universe it would be as commonplace as the more familliar forms of science and technology are in ours.

Such a Phantasy World would undoubtably be a fascinating place full of magic, and mages, and warlocks, and dragons and other beings imaginable and unimaginable from our dark and mythic literary past. So lets go there. Step through the Stargate of your mind and enter a world where dream and day unite, where the stars wish on you, where there are no guns, and cars, and planes.

Only You.

And the limits of your imagination...
